Cathedral Prep Coach and Teacher Larry Byrnes:
Regarding Michael De Carlo, I remember him very well, and think of him often. His death was a terrible loss. At Cathedral I was fortunate to coach some very tough, hard-nosed players and Michael was as tough as they come. He was not tall but got the maximum out of his talent. He was a pleasure to coach. He especially loved to play defense. My memory tells me his older brother was studying to be a Dr., not sure if he finished, though I think so.

Cathedral Prep & Iona Classmate Skip Morton:
Mike De Carlo was my lab partner in Psychology. He was also in ROTC and when he graduated, he not only got engaged, but got his commission. Shortly thereafter he was injured while body surfing at TIANA Beach, Southampton, Hampton Bays, Long Island, NY. He broke his neck and was paralyzed. He passed away not long after. Sad stuff. He was a good friend and so much to live for.

Cathedral Prep & Iona Classmate Joseph Murphy:

In 1962 when I met Mike DeCarlo at 555 he was solid. Solid? A strong academic student and most likely the most fit athlete in our class. Shorter than most of us, but not in spirit and competitiveness on and off the court. At our weekly gym class he was the one called on by Coach Byrnes to demonstrate a squat thrust or one arm push up. He played on the basketball team for four years. We studied together for three years in Father Dennen’s Italian class at 555. My Irish Pastor who had studied in Rome observed "Why would Cathedral have a Priest of Irish decent teaching Italian?"  Mike did well scholastically albeit, quietly without show. After four years at Cathedral Mike, went to Iona College in 1966. We met again in 1968 when I transferred to Iona College. He was one of five Prep classmates attending Iona College. By then Mike was active in Intramural sports and was an ROTC candidate. Weekly Mike would be in his ROTC uniform, a solid brick shithouse. Don’t mess with Mike. He was our first classmate to die, at least that is my recall. At a gala event at Iona, in the nineties, I had the opportunity to address our classmates. I shared that a day does not pass when I do not recall a memory of Mike and his endless smile. RIP.
