Joseph G Sexton

 



 

Joe G Sexton was born on June 15 1943 in Yonkers New York. He spent his childhood in White Plains and Peekskill NY.  After spending 6 years of commuting from Peekskill to Cathedral Prep, Joe entered St. Joseph Seminary in June of 1963.  In 1965 Joe was sent to Rome to further his studies.  He was ordained in Rome in June of 1968.

After returning to the USA in 1969 he was initially assigned to Sacred Heart parish in Monroe, NY.  Joe's other assignments included Harrison, Staten Island, Yonkers, New Rochelle and finally Holy Spirit parish in Cortland Manor.

Joe was the host of a weekly radio show on a local station in Westchester. He attended Iona College and earned a Masters degree in Pastoral Counseling. He also was a diocesan representative for annulments in the NY Tribunal.  Joe also began several folk groups in the parishes he worked in. 

In 1997 Joe left the active ministry, after 29 years, and married.  He and his wife Terry Maikisch moved to Buffalo NY where he became a Financial Advisor.

Joe retired in 2008 and became involved in several community projects. He was a member of the parish folk group. Joe was appointed to the Amherst Traffic Advisory Board and was elected to the board of his condo association.  For 15 years Joe taught a Drivers Safety Course for AARP until his health began to fail.  On August 29th 2023, Joe was called home. True to his giving nature, Joe donated his body to University at Buffalo's Anatomical Body Donation program.  He used to say that he was going to medical school when he died and there he is.
